What goes into the cost of food photography?

When it comes to food photography, the final images may look effortless, but there’s an incredible amount of work, expertise, and investment that goes into creating them. For brands and businesses, it’s important to understand what’s included in the pricing for professional food photography and why it’s worth the investment. So let's break down the key components of food photography pricing, what I cover as a food stylist and photographer, and how it all comes together to deliver exceptional results for you and your brand!

1. Pre-Production: Planning and Preparation

Before the camera even comes out, a significant amount of time and effort goes into planning the shoot. This includes:

  • Brand Research: Getting to know your brand, and getting familiar with your products and your existing imagery.

  • Concept Development: Collaborating with you to understand your brand’s vision and goals for the images.

  • Styling and Props: Sourcing high-quality props, backgrounds, and tableware that align with your brand’s aesthetic.

  • Recipe Development: If needed, creating and testing recipes to ensure they look and taste amazing.

  • Shot List and Mood Boards: Organising a detailed plan to ensure I capture every image you need, from hero shots to detailed close-ups.

2. The Shoot: Capturing the Perfect Food Shot

On shoot day, the magic happens, but it’s not as simple as just snapping a picture (wouldn't THAT be nice...!). Here’s what’s involved:

  • Professional Equipment: I use high-end cameras, lenses, lighting, and other gear to ensure every shot is of the highest quality.

  • Food Styling: Preparing and arranging food to look its best under the camera’s lens, often using techniques to ensure it stays fresh and visually appealing.

  • Lighting Mastery: Manipulating light to highlight textures, colors, and the overall mood of the dish.

  • Time and Precision: Each shot can take considerable time to perfect, especially when working with intricate compositions or delicate ingredients.

3. Post-Production: Polishing the Images

Once the shoot is complete, the work continues in post-production. This includes:

  • Image Selection: Reviewing and selecting the best shots that meet the brief.

  • Editing and Retouching: Enhancing colors, adjusting lighting, and removing any imperfections to create flawless, vibrant images.

  • File Delivery: Providing high-resolution files optimized for your specific needs, whether for print, web, or social media.

4. Behind-the-Scenes Costs Covered by the Food Photographer (that's me!)

As a food photographer, I invest in many elements of the service I provide behind the scenes to ensure I can deliver top-quality work. These include:

  • Equipment Maintenance and Upgrades: Cameras, lenses, lighting, and editing software require regular updates and upkeep.

  • Studio Space: Renting or maintaining a dedicated space for shoots, complete with proper lighting and props.

  • Props, Backdrops and Styling Materials: Building and maintaining a collection of versatile, high-quality props and backdrops.

  • Ingredients: Purchasing fresh, high-quality ingredients for each shoot.

  • Time: Beyond the hours spent shooting, there’s time dedicated to planning, shopping, travel, client communication, and editing.

  • Ongoing Education: I regularly invest in workshops, courses, and resources to stay updated on the latest techniques, trends, and tools in food photography. This commitment ensures that I bring fresh ideas and the highest level of expertise to every project.

5. Why Food Photography is an Investment

High-quality food photography does more than just look good—it tells a story, captures attention, and drives engagement. Whether you’re launching a new product, updating your menu, or building your brand’s presence online, professional food photography is a powerful tool that delivers a return on investment.

6. Tailoring Food Photography Pricing to Your Needs

Every project is unique, and so is my pricing. Factors that influence the cost include:

  • The number of images required.

  • The complexity of the shoot (e.g., intricate styling or multiple setups).

  • Whether recipe development or specialised props are needed.

  • Usage rights (e.g., for social media, print advertising, or packaging).

When you hire me, you’re not just paying for photos—you’re investing in years of experience, technical expertise, and a creative vision that brings your brand to life.

Food photography is much more than capturing a beautiful plate—it’s about crafting a visual story that resonates with your audience. From meticulous planning and styling to precise editing and delivery, every step is designed to elevate your brand and showcase your product in the best possible light (literally!) By understanding the work, time and dedication behind each image, you can see why professional food photography is a valuable investment. If you’re ready to elevate your food brand visuals, let’s collaborate to create something truly delicious.
